GE14 | Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) chief Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin has expressed regret that his remarks regarding next week's general election have been politicised.

“It is a shame that some irresponsible elements are trying to spin what I have said in the Navy Facebook, and are turning it into fake news,” he tweeted this afternoon.

He was responding to a news site which claimed that his statement was a breakthrough for Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

In the tweet, the RMN chief uploaded an image of the said report and labelled it as “fake news”.

In a statement posted on the Navy Facebook last night, Ahmad Kamarulzaman urged personnel not to miss the "golden opportunity" to vote and assured them that their "vote is secret."

He also reminded naval personnel not to get involved in politics and to vote wisely.

Another posting on the RMN page appeared today, making a similar call, and included the hashtag for BN's motto for GE14, #HebatkanNegaraku.

'Don't manipulate'

Meanwhile, Perak BN chief Zambry Abd Kadir (photo) warned the people not to manipulate Ahmad Kamarulzaman's remarks.

"You better read his (Ahmad Kamarulzaman's) latest tweet this morning. He said that what he said has been spun by a specific person.

"He gave advice and unfortunately, there are certain people who are trying to manipulate. Please read his new tweet. He is disappointed with that (spin)," he told the media during a walkabout in Pulau Pangkor, Lumut this morning.

Zambry said urging people to come out to vote is a normal thing, and everyone would say this too, including the Election Commission.

"As the Perak BN chief, I also want people to come out to vote – there is nothing wrong with it.

"What is wrong is when there are people out there trying to manipulate what he said. This is the problem and you should refer back to his statement," he added.

Zambry is the incumbent Pangkor state assemblyperson and caretaker Perak menteri besar. He will defend the seat in the coming polls.

He will also be contesting the Lumut parliamentary seat, under which Pangkor is located.

Lumut has the largest RMN base in the country, with its officers and personnel making up 11,352 voters or 16.9 percent of 67,157 voters in the seat.

In the last GE, retired naval officer Mohamad Imran defeated MCA candidate Kong Cho Ha with a majority of 8,168 votes or 9.3 percent of the votes cast.
