A Barisan Nasional (BN) backbencher today urged the federal government to stop financial allocations for Selangor since it was declared a 'developed' state in August.

Debating on the Budget 2006 at the committee stage in the Dewan Rakyat, Nasaruddin Hashim (BN-Parit) also urged the government to review the formula pertaining to state allocations.

He said the allocations should be given to help improve a particular state's financial status and therefore must be based on the development status of the respective states.

"For states such as Sabah and Sarawak which are still lagging behind, they should be given more allocations whereas for states which can be independent on their state incomes, should be given lesser or nothing at all," he added.

He then cited Selangor as an example, and this irked Mat Yasir Ikhsan (BN-Sabak Bernam) who asked the former to retract his statement.

"We hope those developed can continue to develop, I hope you will withdraw the statement," he said.

Replying to this, Nasaruddin said it was up to the relevant ministry to decide on the matter.
