GE14 | A Kuala Langat BN candidate roadshow last night turned into a rock concert and a lucky draw after most of the candidates failed to show up.

The promotional poster for the event featured images of all four BN candidates for Kuala Langat – Shahril Sufian Hamdan for the parliamentary seat, as well as Sulaiman Mohd Karli, Ng Siok Hwa and Rozana Kamarulzaman for the Sijangkang, Banting and Morib state seats respectively.

Several people told Malaysiakini that they were particularly looking forward to meeting Shahril. However, only Sulaiman showed up - as the event came to its closing.

The event, held in a football field in sleepy Kampung Sungai Buaya in Morib, got off to a slow start.

The stage was still being set up at 9.30pm, an hour after the official starting time.

The mostly-Malay crowd trickled in slowly, with many of the 500 tables and additional 500 seats empty until later in the night.

They helped themselves to packs of nasi lemak and fried bee hoon, many taking more than one pack each.

'BN boleh!' rings out

At 10pm, comedians Yassin Yahya and Ebby Yus finally took the stage as emcees.

Yassin was dressed in a blue waistcoat with a BN logo, while Ebby told the crowd to be “thankful” for the peace that they enjoy.

“Our (BN) candidates will ensure this peace continues, we should maintain what we have in our country,” Ebby said.

Singers Nash and Bandi Amuk and the rock band Jinbara proceeded to entertain the audience, reminding the audience to “think carefully” before they vote and leading chants of “BN boleh!” (BN can) between songs.

The audience of 1,500, which included many families and young children, responded enthusiastically to the singers and appeared to know the lyrics of most of the songs.

No BN candidate was seen when the emcees began the lucky draw.

Among the items given out were a motorcycle, a 32-inch LED television, a washing machine, a refrigerator, irons and blenders.

At the stroke of midnight, 29-year-old Norisma Salilan was announced as the winner of the motorcycle, just as Sulaiman (left in photo below)arrived on the scene.
