GE14 | The Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) will demand that the Election Commission (EC) be "revamped" in order to take into account of "wholesome" practices in other countries.

In a statement today, Suhakam chairperson Razali Ismail said this was necessary because the playing field for the elections has been marred by irregularities.

"(There are) questionable disqualification of candidates and money and gifts being distributed, which is defended as being within the perimeters of Malaysian law, but long discarded by many democratic countries," he said.

Razali said that the recent changes in electoral boundaries were another "epic breach" of democratic election principles because the principles of proportionality were flouted.

He added that Suhakam has also received numerous reports of people who have had their voting rights curtailed because they did not receive their postal ballots in time.

As an agency for the people mandated by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Razali said EC's objective was to facilitate fair and independent voting process.

"(Their job is) not to take actions that can make it be accused of being partisan and selective," he said.

In the meantime, Razali said Suhakam will continue its election monitoring efforts despite failing to obtain official accreditation from the EC.

He said Suhakam called upon voters to report breaches of election regulations to them.

"Suhakam encourages Malaysians to take the opportunity of tomorrow's general election to exercise their civil and political rights by casting their vote wisely and judiciously, with the best interest of our beloved nation," he said.

Suhakam has deployed 50 observers throughout the country.

It was denied accreditation by the EC on grounds that one commission should not observe another.
