GE14 | MIC president and four-term Segamat MP Dr S Subramaniam has lost his seat in the 14th general election.

According to unofficial election results, he lost to PKR's R Santhara Kumar, a businessperson who is contesting for the first time in an election.

Another contender for the seat was PAS' Khairul Faizi Ahmad.

The crushing defeat comes just two days after Subramaniam, who is also the caretaker health minister, awarded a replanting incentive of RM4,000 each to 250 settlers from Felda Palong Timur Dua and Felda Palong Timur Tiga in Johor, which amounted to about RM1.06 million.

Malaysiakini is trying to verify the number of votes gained by the candidates.

Santhara is the founder of the Masterskill Education Group and one of his main goals in stepping into the political arena is to improve the status of education in the country.

Subramaniam is not the only "giant" to suffer defeat in Johor.

Incumbent Johor Bahru MP and Umno veteran Shahrir Abdul Samad, has also been unofficially defeated by Harapan's Akmal Nasir, by a majority of over 12,000 votes.
