GE14 | As the dust settled after the 14th general election, which saw BN chairperson Najib Abdul Razak lead the coalition to its first loss since independence, several of his lieutenants also met with defeat.

While Najib won comfortably in Pekan with a 24,859-vote majority, a total of eight ministers and 19 deputy ministers were defeated in their parliamentary contests.

Not all were incumbent MPs, as some were senators contesting in the general election.

The ministers defeated were Liow Tiong Lai (transport), Dr S Subramanaim (health) and Mah Siew Keong (plantation industries and commodities).

The trio are also the chiefs of BN components MCA, MIC and Gerakan respectively.

Liow lost Bentong by 2,032 votes, Subramaniam lost Segamat by 5,476 votes, and Mah Siew Keong lost Teluk Intan by 11,179 votes to Pakatan Harapan.

Other ministers who were defeated included Shabery Cheek (agriculture and agro-based industry), Johari Abdul Ghani (finance), Salleh Said Keruak (communications and multimedia), as well as Jamil Khir Baharom and Abdul Rahman Dahlan (Prime Minister's Department).

Salleh and Rahman were among the staunchest defenders of Najib. Both were defeated by Harapan ally Parti Warisan Sabah.

Salleh lost by 4,262 votes in Kota Belud, while Rahman was defeated by 12,984 votes in Sepanggar.

Shabery lost by 2,163 votes in Kemaman, while Jamil lost by 539 votes in Jerai, both to PAS.

Johari (photo) lost by 4,139 votes to Bersatu in Titiwangsa.

At the state level, caretaker Johor menteri besar Mohamed Khaled Nordin suffered a shock defeat in both the parliamentary seat of Pasir Gudang, by 24,726 votes, and his stronghold state seat of Permas by 8,746 votes. 

In Kedah, caretaker state menteri besar Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah was defeated by a 6,251-majority in his incumbent seat of Suka Menanti.

In Sabah, caretaker deputy chief minister Joseph Pairin Kitingan, known as the paramount leader of the Kadazandusun community, lost to his own brother Jeffrey in the state seat of Tambunan by 1,037 votes.

Jeffrey leads Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star).

A total of 19 deputy ministers were also defeated at the polls. They are:

Johari Baharum (Lost Kubang Pasu by 13,009 votes to Bersatu);

Rosnah Abd Rashid Shirlin (Lost Papar by 325 votes to Warisan);

Razali Ibrahim (Lost Muar by 6,952 votes to Bersatu);

Othman Aziz (Lost Jerlun by 5,866 votes to Bersatu);

Lee Chee Leong (Lost Kampar by 11,801 votes to DAP);

Hamim Samuri (Lost Ledang by 8,666 votes to PKR);

Nur Jazlan Mohamed (Lost Pulai by 28,924 votes to Amanah);

Chua Tee Yong (Lost Labis by 3,408 votes to DAP);

Chew Mei Fun (Lost Raub by 3,159 votes to DAP);

Hilmi Yahaya (Lost Balik Pulau by 6,464 votes to PKR);

Aziz Kaprawi (Lost Sri Gading to Bersatu by 3,288 votes to Bersatu);

Loga Bala Mohan (Lost Segambut by 45,702 votes to DAP);

Nogeh Gumbek (Lost Mas Gading by 3,024 votes to DAP);

Mary Yap (Lost Tawau by 4,727 votes to PKR);

P Kamalanathan (Lost Hulu Selangor by 13,391 votes to PKR);

Chong Sin Woon (Lost Seremban by 30,694 votes to DAP);

Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki (Lost Pasir Puteh by 1,360 votes to PAS); and

S Devamany (Lost Sungai Siput by 5,607 votes to PKR).
