S'pore will continue to work closely with Harapan gov't - report

GE14 | Singapore will continue to work closely with Malaysia's new government to advance the relationship between the two countries, the republic’s Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing reportedly said.

In response to questions about the impact of Malaysia's historic election results on bilateral ties, Chan said that it was still "early days" to assess what the outcome would mean for major projects such as the High Speed Railway, and added that Singapore looks forward to the formation of a new Malaysian government.

The Singapore government was "closely following" developments in Malaysia, Chan was quoted as saying by The Business Times.

"Malaysian politics is for Malaysians to decide.

"We have a long-standing and broad-ranging relationship with the Malaysians and we expect the government of the day to continue to advance this relationship to the mutual benefit of both countries."

Chan was reportedly speaking on the sidelines of a factory visit to food company SMC Food 21's premises in Jurong.

The massive victory by Pakatan Harapan led by former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad in the 14th general election yesterday put an end to the six decades of BN administration.

Mahathir is expected to be sworn in as the seventh prime minister at 9.30pm tonite.
