PKR vice-president and Hang Tuah Jaya MP Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin has been freed of a Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 charge for illegally gathering at a prohibited place.

Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court judge Zainal Abidin Kamaruddin said that the defence had created reasonable doubt in the case.

"Hence the accused is acquitted," he said.

Shamsul was charged with gathering at the Ar-Rahman Mosque in Kuala Lumpur en route to the Black 505 rally in 2013.

Last month on April 13, Zainal Abidin also acquitted four activists – Adam Adli Abdul Halim, Muhammad Safwan Anang, Ekhsan Bukharee and Mohamad Bukhairy Mohamad Sofian and former PKR Youth leader Khairul Anuar Ahmad Zainuddin - of a similar charge.

Shamsul Iskandar, 43, was represented by Haijan Omar while DPP Mohd Mustaffa P Kunyalam and DPP Nurulhuda Noraini Mohd Noor appeared for the prosecution.

A total of five prosecution witnesses and 14 defence witnesses testified in the trial.

The charge under the PAA 2012 allows for a punishment of a maximum fine of RM20,000 if convicted.

Zainal Abidin is the third judge who presided over Shamsul's case.

In the recent polls, Shamsul Iskandar won the Hang Tuah Jaya MP seat defeating former Malacca chief minister Mohd Ali Rustam from BN and PAS Dr Md Khalid Kassim by a majority of 8,540.

He also contested the Rim state seat but lost in a three-way fight.
