‘Dr M showing extraordinary zeal to make things right’

Pakatan Harapan de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim can see a bright future ahead for Malaysia, owing to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s “extraordinary zeal” in fixing the past administration’s mistakes.
“I can see his extraordinary zeal (keghairahan dia yang luar biasa) to correct, to fix, the damage that has taken place. I think our future will be brighter,” he said.
He said this during an interview with Astro Awani today shortly after his release from prison, where he was asked to comment on Mahathir becoming the oldest prime minister in the world – at a time where younger leaders are taking the helm, like Canada's Justin Trudeau and France’s Emmanuel Macron.
Anwar replied that it is not a simple matter of age, as even young people could become ultra-conservatives or become spoilt by a life of luxury.
“What is important is that the youths showcased should have idealism and resilient ethics. The same goes for old people,” he said.
Anwar also stressed that he would not have endorsed Mahathir and Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the country’s top two leaders it he did not have confidence in them.
“If I am not confident with this team I wouldn’t have supported them. I have suffered for so long, tossed aside, tortured.
“What meaning is there for me to be in politics if I’m just going to put on a show pretending to give support?” he asked.
However, Anwar stressed that Mahathir and Wan Azizah’s success would depend on them listening to the rakyat’s grouses, particularly those at the lower rungs of society.
He added that although the government would not be able to make immediate improvements on all aspects of governance, there should be signs of progress, such as stopping wastage, putting an end to leaders being arrogant, and finding ways to ease the people’s burden.
