A PAS Youth exco member has said that the appointment of Shukri Abdull as the chief commissioner of the MACC goes against the Pakatan Harapan manifesto, as it was not brought to the Parliament.

The Star quoted Nurul Islam Mohamed Yusoff as pointing out that Promise 14 of Harapan's manifesto for the 14th general election, on the reform of MACC and the strengthening of anti-corruption efforts, says that the appointment of all MACC commissioners must be validated democratically by the August House.

"Unfortunately, this appointment was made without it being brought to Parliament.

"An announcement was made in the media after a Harapan presidential council meeting," Nurul Islam was quoted as saying in a statement.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad recently announced that Shukri, a veteran of 32 years with the commission, was returning to helm the agency.

He opted for early retirement in July 2016.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement, MACC welcomed Shukri's appointment and said its staff were looking forward to working with the anti-graft veteran.

"MACC hopes he can fulfil his duty, responsibility and the people's aspirations to ensure the country is free from corruption and power abuse," it said.
