Flood mitigation projects will be among the main projects for the Permatang Pauh constituency, said its MP Nurul Izzah Anwar.

She said the old drainage system in several areas in the constituency will be upgraded and a study on flood mitigation will be carried out.

“I fee this is very important because, for so many years, decades, the problem of floods is faced by so many people in so many states. The main problem is the drainage system especially in Taman Siakap in Seberang Jaya.

"The Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) has implemented several projects to upgrade the old drainage system to a new one,” she said in a press conference held after visiting the MPSP office in Bukit Mertajam today.

Nurul Izzah said the state Department of Irrigation and Drainage was conducting a study of the drainage system in Taman Siakap and Taman Senangin in Seberang Jaya and the study was due to be completed in October.

"After the study has been completed, it will be tabled at the Flood Mitigation Committee meeting which will discuss the costs involved and we will wait for the subsequent action to be taken,” she said.

According to records, Penang had suffered 119 floods from 2013 until Oct 14 last year.
