Gov't to study civil servant pay increment promised by Najib

The status of the additional annual salary increment for civil servants this July will be looked into and finalised by the new government, chief secretary to the government Mohd Ali Hamsa said today.

Ali said the announcement on the salary increment involving 1.6 million civil servants, which should come into effect on July 1, was a promise made by the previous BN administration and it was now up to the new Pakatan Harapan government whether to proceed or scrap it.

“We will follow the manifesto of the current government. The new cabinet will hold its first meeting tomorrow and the government will decide on the matter later,” he told reporters after meeting Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad at the Perdana Leadership Foundation today.

The announcement of the additional salary increment was made by former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak when addressing about 10,000 civil servants at the 16th Civil Service Premier Gathering (MAPPA XVI) in Putrajaya on April 4.

Najib had said the salary increment, which would involve a financial implication of RM1.46 billion, was in appreciation for the service, sacrifice and hard work put in by the civil servants.
