A DAP lawmaker has urged MACC chief commissioner Mohd Shukri Abdull to stop his public outbursts on the 1MDB scandal.

Ramkarpal Singh said Shukri should know better than to publicly claim he was threatened and harassed as a result of investigating the 1MDB scandal in 2015.

“While I sympathise with his plight, Shukri must be aware that such public statements can jeopardise the current investigations into 1MDB, which he now helms, as it may be suggested that his impartiality has been compromised as his investigations now may be related to the harassment he claimed to have experienced in the past.

“Such a suggestion is serious as it can potentially lead to a miscarriage of justice in the event parties are charged in relation to the said matter in the future, on the ground that the investigations into it were biased as this would be a serious breach of the natural justice any accused person is entitled to,” Ramkarpal added in a statement.

The Bukit Gelugor MP was referring to Shukri's allegation-riddled press conference yesterday, where he claimed, among others, to have received bullets in the mail and was stalked while he was abroad.

The press conference was held at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya at the same time former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak was being questioned at the venue on transactions involving former 1MDB subsidiary SRC International.

Ramkarpal, who is a lawyer, said Shukri should lodge the necessary reports for the police to take action.

“In the circumstances, I strongly urge Shukri to stop such public outbursts and lodge the necessary police reports for the necessary action to be taken pertaining to his complaints.

“The current investigations into the 1MDB scandal by the MACC cannot be seen to be tainted in any way as the suspects thereto have every right to be fairly investigated and must not be deprived of such right,” he added.

Ramkarpal's stand contradicted that of his party's veteran leader Lim Kit Siang, who defended Shukri's tell-all press conference.

Conceding that the press conference was unorthodox, Lim pointed out that the circumstances surrounding the 1MDB scandal were extraordinary.

Lim also criticised PAS lawyer Wan Zainuddin Wan Musa, who claimed Shukri's statements were prejudicial towards Najib.
