Attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali should resign voluntarily in light of the revelation that the Saudi prince who is said to have donated RM2.6 billion to former premier Najib Abdul Razak could not provide supporting documents to prove this, said a DAP lawmaker.

Ramkarpal Singh said this was in stark contrast with the US Department of Justice's (DOJ) well-known claim that the said sum was diverted from 1MDB.

He recalled how Apandi, in a highly publicised press conference on Jan 26, 2016, declared that the RM2.6 billion was a donation from the Saudi royal family and cleared Najib of any wrongdoing as a result.

“In light of the above, it is likely that Apandi would be required to assist in the current investigations into the said RM2.6 billion claim by providing a statement to the authorities particularly in relation to his prior investigations into the same.

“As a former Federal Court judge, Apandi is well aware that it would be highly embarrassing for him to assist in such investigations as a sitting AG and as such, he must resign forthwith.

“His resignation would also enable the prime minister to advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the appointment of a new AG under Article 145(1) of the Federal Constitution which must be done urgently in light of the many cases that are being reopened for investigations for which the advise of the AG to the government is crucial,” he added in a statement.

The Bukit Gelugor pointed out that he had mentioned before that Apandi had overstayed his welcome and must resign.

“It is the honourable thing to do and must be done now without any further delay,” he said.

'Should quit'

Yesterday, MACC chief commissioner Mohd Shukri Abdull revealed that the commission's officers had met the Saudi prince.

He said the latter admitted making the donation but failed to provide proof of this.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has accused Apandi of concealing evidence with regard to the 1MDB scandal.

Apandi, who has denied this, is currently on leave.

Meanwhile, Lawyers for Liberty adviser N Surendran agreed with RamKarpal that Apandi should quit as he could be investigated following Shukri's revelations.

"That is the honourable thing to do, he should go. Tender your resignation and do the right thing and leave.

"The MACC revelations show that Apandi should have prosecuted Najib," he told reporters at the Federal Court where he is attending a case.
