Petaling Jaya is likely to be declared a city next year and the Petaling Jaya Municipal Council (MPPJ) will get down to work soon on preparations for the event, its president Ahmad Termizi Puteh said today.

"We will be making preparations and a meeting will be held this month to discuss the issue," he said.

It was reported on Oct 1 that Petaling Jaya would be conferred city status by April. Selangor Menteri Besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo said this was decided by the Federal Government in September.

"This is in recognition of all PJ residents who helped to develop the town and make it a success story," he had said.

Petaling Jaya will be the second city in Selangor, after Shah Alam which was conferred city status on October 10, 2000.
