Umno lawmaker Azeez Abdul Rahim has denied he is the northern MP whom MACC chief commissioner Mohd Shukri Abdull claimed attempted to bribe him to drop the 1MDB investigation in 2015.

“I am not the person he mentioned. I have never met him. I never disturbed him from doing his investigation. Who am I? What power do I have?” he told Utusan Online.

Contacted by Malaysiakini later, the Umno supreme council member said he would hold a press conference on this issue soon.

“I have spoken to many quarters about this. I will hold a PC (press conference) soon,” he added.

This has been a taxing week for Azeez, whose houses and offices were raided by MACC to facilitate investigations into Tabung Haji contracts.

Following yesterday's simultaneous raids in Kedah and Kuala Lumpur, news surfaced that Azeez had resigned as Tabung Haji chairperson.

On Tuesday, Shukri told a press conference about the threats and difficulties he faced when probing the 1MDB scandal.

He revealed how an MP approached him and offered a bribe, which another news report claimed was in the tune of RM3 million cash.

Although he did not name the MP, the MACC chief commissioner said the lawmaker came from the north and was known for the adage “cash is king”.

“He came to me twice wanting to bribe me to drop the investigation. The second time, I told him he better leave me alone or I would arrest him,” he said.

Since then speculation had been rife that Azeez, who is said to be close to former premier Najib Abdul Razak, was the person Shukri referred to.

Yesterday, an Umno leader lodged a police report against the MACC chief commissioner for failing to report the alleged bribe attempt.

Lokman Adam, in his report, said this violated the MACC Act.
