Mahfuz to PAS: Form unity gov't in Kelantan, T'ganu first, then talk

PAS should lead the way by forming a unity government in Kelantan and Terengganu first before proposing that it be done in the Pakatan Harapan states of Kedah and Perak, said Mahfuz Omar (above).

The Pokok Sena member of parliament said that if PAS was truly transparent and sincere about the proposal, they should have implemented unity government in the two states which they ruled instead of pushing it onto other states.

“I want to make a counter proposal to PAS. If they are really sincere, implement it first in Kelantan and Terenganu, why don’t they offer Barisan Nasional (BN), the opposition there, to form a unity government?” he told reporters in Alor Setar yesterday.

Mahfuz, who is also Amanah vice-president, said this in response to PAS’ proposal to form a unity government in resolving the problem which arises from Kedah Harapan and the opposition holding an equal number of seats which has resulted in difficulty to appoint the State Assembly Speaker.

He said Kedah Harapan would stand firm in rejecting the unity government offered by PAS and was confident that Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir would be able to resolve the issue over the appointment of the State Assembly Speaker amicably with the opposition.

“The Speaker’s appointment can be resolved through voting system in the state assembly. If PAS or BN wishes to propose names as candidates for the speaker, they can submit the names and the decision will be based on the number of votes obtained,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mahfuz urged the Harapan-led Kedah government to ensure adequate supply of water for consumption throughout Ramadan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

He said Syarikat Air Darulaman (SADA) should take preliminary steps in effective planning so that water problems would not recur and cause problems to the people.
