‘No extra deduction from husbands for EPF housewife contribution’

The proposal for Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contribution for housewives does not involve any additional deduction from the salary of their husbands, said Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Dr Wan Azizah, who is also Women, Family and Community Development Minister, said the two percent contribution by the husbands would be taken from the 11 percent they now contributed to their own EPF account from their salary.

“We are not going to make any additional deduction, only taking from the 11 percent. Let’s give recognition to women,” she said to reporters after a visit to the Rumah Ehsan old folks home in Kuala Kubu Bharu today.

Wan Azizah said the ministry officials would have a meeting with EPF CEO Shahril Ridza Ridzuan on Thursday to discuss the mechanism for the deduction of the contribution.

The EPF contribution for housewives is one of the promises of the Pakatan Harapan coalition in its manifesto for the general election on May 9.

Besides the sum of two percent from the husband, it has been proposed that the contribution also comprise an RM50 allocation from the government.
