Apart from losing federal power, Umno was also vanquished in its birthplace of Johor in the May 9 general election.

The defeat, however, has not deterred former menteri besar Khaled Nordin from vying for the Umno vice-president post in the coming polls.

This is because he has a plan on how to revive Umno.

“I have several suggestions on how to revive the party. I will reveal the details in the next few days.

“Many people have said Umno needs change, but nobody has explained how to make the changes.

“Before the election, I will put forth my views and the details on how to make the changes,” he told a press conference at the Pasir Gudang Umno headquarters this morning.

With Umno at its lowest point in history, Khaled said his decision to contest for the post was not to gain power or prestige.

He stressed that it was about making Umno stand tall again.

“I offered to contest the vice-presidency at the lowest point of Umno. This is because I believe it is a struggle to make Umno regain people's support as well as to serve the Malays and Malaysians.

“I will not abandon Umno,” he said, adding that he would try to tour the nation to campaign

In the 14th general election, BN only won 19 of the 56 state seats in Johor compared to 38 in the 2013 election.

As for the parliament seats in Johor, the coalition won eight as opposed to 21 before.

Khaled, who is both BN and Umno state chief, failed to defend his Pasir Gudang parliamentary seat and Permas state seat.

Currently, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, former second finance minister Johari Abdul Ghani and former deputy agriculture minister Tajuddin Abdul Rahman have announced their intention to contest for the three vice-president posts.
