(AFP) More than 100 airforce personnel went on a destructive rampage at nightspots in Labuan, Sabah, late yesterday, injuring two civilians, police said today.

The men attacked eight entertainment centres in oil-rich Labuan, breaking tables, chairs, glasses and smashing four cars in an hour-long onslaught, Labuan police chief Sidin Abdul Karim told AFP .

Sidin said it was unclear why the officers ran amok, although revenge for the death of a fellow officer could have been a motive.

"This (type of violence) is very bad. Firstly because it was committed by a disciplined organisation's personnel and secondly because there appears to be no real reason for it to happen," he said.

Two civilians sustained minor injuries in the rampage.

Sidin said initial investigations showed some of the men were unhappy over the death of a fellow officer in a motor accident several days ago.

Held in barracks

They suspected he was killed by people who frequented the night clubs and apparently attacked the clubs out of anger, he said.

"They might be doing it out of revenge but both incidents have no relation."

The first incident when (the officer) died happened very far from the town area," Sidin added.

The suspects were being held in their barracks until investigations had been completed.

"We will investigate and find out who was responsible for this and why they did it. Although there were no serious injuries, this is a very serious offence and damage was quite substantial," Sidin said.
