Giving a smaller annual allocation to representatives of constituencies won by the opposition, compared with those won by Harapan, is not what the ruling coalition promised, a BN lawmaker said.

BN Ayer Hitam parliamentarian Wee Ka Siong took to social media to demand fair treatment for opposition lawmakers.

"The move of the Harapan government to provide an allocation to the opposition is welcomed, given that this was never done by the previous administration," he said in his Facebook posting yesterday.

"However, the allocation for opposition MPs is less than 50 percent of the total amount received by the MPs in the ruling coalition," said MCA deputy president.

"We wish to ask the Harapan MPs, particularly DAP lawmakers who pledged to be fair to all MPs during the election campaign period: Are the people in Ayer Hitam, Cameron Highlands, Kota Bharu, Mersing and other constituencies not paying taxes? Or they pay only half?" Wee asked.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced that an annual allocation of RM500,000 will be given to holders of federal seats won by Harapan while the seats won the opposition will only get RM100,000.

He also said that RM200,000 would be allocated for the MPs' service centres, but it is unclear if this would include seats held by opposition lawmakers as well.

This prompted Ipoh Timur MP Wong Kah Woh to slam Wee for being nitpicking and being shameless, since the BN did not bother to channel funds to the opposition MPs.

Harapan was just at the starting point, Wong said, but Wee expected the ruling coalition to reach the finishing line.

In another posting today, Wee insisted that Harapan broke its promise on an equal amount of constituency funding for the opposition.

"Does asking for equal treatment constitute nitpicking?" he said.

Wee said there was also an incident where he claimed Johor Pakatan Harapan denied BN lawmakers the constituency funds, but later reversed its decision after receiving pressure.
