Chinese ambassador to Malaysia Bai Tian has put his Malay-speaking skills to the test in conjunction with the Hari Raya festive season.

In a one-and-a-half minute video, Bai Tian spoke in Malay to convey his Hari Raya greeting to Muslims in Malaysia.

"In conjunction with Hari Raya Puasa, on behalf of the people of China, particularly the 20 million Chinese Muslims there, I would like to wish Selamat Hari Raya Puasa to all Muslims in Malaysia.

Bai also touched on Malaysia and China's close relationship and used a Malay idiom - “bukit sama didaki, lurah sama dituruni” - to illustrate that both countries went through both good and bad times together.

"May all Muslim Malaysians continue to be granted prosperity," he concluded.

Bai Tian began his posting to Malaysia in November last year, taking over from Huang Huikang who had been ambassador to Malaysia since 2014.

However, less than a year into his term, Bai Tian has had to deal with the sudden change in the Malaysian political landscape.

This was after BN, which had been in power for 61 years since independence, was defeated by Pakatan Harapan in the May 9 general election.
