Pakatan Harapan should not overlook the possibility of new political forces emerging or new political parties being formed in the future, cautioned DAP strategist Liew Chin Tong.
He said voters are no longer afraid of changing the government, so the Harapan government must be aware of this and be alert.
“Bersatu was started on Sept 9, 2016, and it became a ruling party in less than two years. Therefore, we cannot assume there will be no new party emerging to replace Harapan if BN is really bad.”
Liew said Harapan cannot overlook situations such as Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin forming a new party and joining forces with MCA and MIC to become a multiracial party, or Umno and PAS turning into multiracial forces.
According to Sin Chew Daily, the DAP political education bureau chief issued a reminder that DAP’s victory in the recent general election was largely attributable to sentiment against former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
In his analysis, Umno’s Malay votes had split to Harapan and PAS, with more than 20 percent of the Malay voters in suburban areas turning to Harapan.
“Everyone was anti-Najib. PAS obtained votes not because it’s strong, DAP won not a great thing, but because everyone was against Najib.”
Liew pointed out that Kelantan and Terengganu voters had voted PAS to check on Umno, with the Islamic party eventually seizing control of the two states.
