Umno, through its strategic communication unit, has gone on the offensive after losing in the May 9 general election, issuing a slew of statements against its political opponents.

However, these statements have not been accompanied by a name, leading to critics – including DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang – to question who is pulling the strings of the "mysterious, nameless, faceless and shadowy" unit.

In a statement today, the strategic communication unit denied Lim's speculation that it is being controlled by former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak or former minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan.

"His (Lim's) question whether this unit was involved in the revelation that 'MO1 is Najib' as claimed by an Umno leader has nothing to do with this unit.

"The claim that this unit is under the control of Najib is also baseless, as there are many contributors, including Umno members and social media users," it said.

The unit had launched a broadside against Lim after the DAP leader suggested that it expel Najib from Umno to "exorcise" itself from his legacy.

Najib is accused of being involved in the misappropriation of billions of ringgit from state-owned company 1MDB, which he denies.

The unit questioned Lim's motive in wanting to "interfere" in Umno's affairs.

"Lim's attempt to interfere in Umno's decision on its fate appears as if he wants to see the destruction of the sole Malay party," it said.

It said the Umno unit was no different than DAP's party organ Roketkini or PAS' Harakah.
