The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department has distanced itself from the claim by Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd that its Group CEO Nazrin Hassan died from injuries sustained when his cell phone exploded while charging.

Speaking to the Malay Mail, department director Azmi Osman stated that the claim had been made by the family of the deceased.

He urged all parties to avoid further speculation on the case as his department was still awaiting results from the electronics testing laboratory.

Azmi estimated that the laboratory results would only be available in one to two weeks and so they were unable to rule out any other element in Nazrin's death.

As such, he said it was too "premature" to establish anything.

“The statement that the cause of the fire was from an exploding handphone that was charged next to him was made by the family, not us.

“Please wait, let’s not speculate anything yet. But to clear the air we did not say the cause was from a handphone explosion. Give us time to investigate," Azmi was quoted saying.

He reportedly said the Fire and Rescue Department had not sought police assistance in the case as it has yet to find anything suspicious in the death, pending investigations.

Nazrin perished after a fire engulfed his room at his home in Mutiara Damansara last Thursday.

The 48-year-old was reported to have died from smoke inhalation and had suffered 30 percent burns on his body.

Even so, a statement by his by Cradle Fund the next day attributed his cause of death to injuries sustained when one of his handphones exploded next to him as it was being charged.

Cradle Fund stated that a post-mortem indicated as such as he sustained "blast injuries attributable to an exploding handphone that was being charged next to him".

It had also been reported that a message, purportedly from an unnamed family member, which had gone viral on social media, stated that one of two handphones in Nazrin's possession had overheated and exploded, causing a blunt trauma to the back of his head.
