Puteri Umno polls take ugly turn as delegate spat on

A commotion broke out during the Bukit Bintang Puteri Umno delegates meeting and elections at Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur today.

The incident happened during the counting of votes, when an individual suddenly spat on one of the delegates, but the situation calmed down 10 minutes later.

According to a delegate, the commotion began when the counting room door being suddenly closed.

"I wonder why they closed the door, it should be opened for everyone to see that the counting process is being carried out transparently," she said.

A total of 74 delegates attended the meeting.

Brach barred from voting

A ruckus also broke out at the Kulim-Bandar Baharu division Wanita Umno delegates’ conference, over a dispute that the Banggol Rashid branch of the division was barred from voting at the conference.

The dispute began when a delegate stood up and questioned the reasons behind the hindrance, but the situation calmed down 10 minutes later after the division's Wanita Umno vice-chief Mariyaton Ibrahim gave her explanation.

“It is confirmed that the branch has not held (its) meeting within the stipulated time frame and as such, it cannot vote despite various reasons had been given,” she said when explaining on the matter before the 277 delegates at the conference in Kulim.

The conference saw a contest between Bandar Baharu state assemblyperson Norsabrina Mohd Noor and incumbent Nazira Abd Rahim to vie for the post of Kulim-Bandar Baharu division Wanita Umno chief.

Uproar in Terengganu

In Hulu Terengganu, meanwhile, there was an uproar at the party's youth wing delegates’ conference today after a handful of the delegates could not vote for failing to submit their official delegate letters to the Umno division within the stipulted time frame.

The situation returned to normal after the affected delegates realised that it was their mistake for having overlooked the matter.

One of the delegates, former Hulu Terengganu Umno Youth chief Mohd Johari Abu Bakar said they had no choice but to abide by the party’s regulations, and could only be observers at the conference.

“It is indeed disappointing… Maybe some have overlooked the matter that caused this technical problem to occur. Their failure to vote is a loss as all positions in the youth wing are contested today,” he told reporters at the conference held at the Kuala Berang Community Hall here.

Hulu Terengganu Umno secretary confirmed the matter, saying that he did not receive the letters within the given period.
