The family of Anwar Ibrahim has requested that he receive no visitors while undergoing treatment in the hospital.

A statement sent out today on behalf of his family said that the de facto Pakatan Harapan leader suffered a severe prolapsed disc, and that doctors were currently monitoring and evaluating his condition.

"His family is with him at the moment and remain grateful for all the concern, doa (prayers) and support received.

"We have been advised to request that our father not receive any visitors as he undergoes the necessary observation and treatment," the statement read.

The family further thanked everyone for their understanding over the request.

Anwar, who is slated to take over as prime minister from Dr Mahathir Mohamad in two years' time, was rushed from his home in Bukit Segambut to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre in an ambulance yesterday. 

He had reportedly complained of pains in his back and shoulder after returning from a recent trip to Turkey, but is said to be in stable condition.
