After two years of being cooped up at home, Malaysia's most popular political cartoonist Zunar is happy to fly off from the country.

En route to London at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport today, Zunar, whose real name is Zulkiflee SM Anwar Ulhaque, said he is set to leave on an airplane for the first time since 2016.

"All clear... leaving the Immigration counter for the first time since two years ago - destination London," Zunar wrote on his social media.

Accompanying his message was a photo of him smiling, luggage in hand at the Immigration counter.

"Two years ago on this exact day, June 24, 2016, the BN government imposed a travel ban on me for special reasons," he said.

"Thank you Pakatan Harapan government, for withdrawing the ban."

Zulkiflee was barred from travelling outside Malaysia since June 2016, after he held an exhibition of his cartoons in Geneve, Switzerland.

With nine counts of sedition stacked on him then, he was accused of tarnishing the country's image with his politically critical cartoons.

Despite the lifting of the ban after Harapan seized federal power on May 9, Zunar is determined to continue his legal challenge against the previous administration’s ban, which was upheld by the High Court in Kuala Lumpur.

His challenge was dismissed in November 2017, and he has since filed an appeal with the Federal Court.
