Halim Shafie has stepped down as Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) head, along with three others.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said their resignation letters were submitted on Monday (June 25) and would take effect on July 1.

He also confirmed that chief operating officer Mazlan Ismail had resigned. He said further details would be revealed tomorrow.

Halim is a career civil servant whose first stint as MCMC chairperson lasted from 2006 to 2009. He then headed Telekom Malaysia before being appointed as MCMC chairperson again in 2015.

During Halim's second stint, MCMC was faced with allegations that one of its contractors was involved in a massive data breach involving cellular phone records.

No one has been charged over the matter and Gobind had pledged to investigate soon after he took charge of the ministry.
