The Perak Tourism, Arts and Culture Committee is preparing a working paper on Pulau Sembilan, which was closed to visitors since April last year, to be tabled to the state government to decide whether it would remain closed or be opened to visitors again.

State Tourism, Arts and Culture Committee chairperson Tan Kar Hing said the island, famous for its ‘blue sand’ was closed due to the damage caused to the ecosystem there.

“Whether Pulai Sembilan will remain closed or opened again to visitors will be decided by the state government after we have tabled the working paper,” he told reporters after an Aidilfitri gathering organised by Perak Tourism in Ipoh last night.

Tan said the Public Works Department had completed conservation work on the island.

He also said a consultation council would be set up to prepare a master plan for the state tourism industry.

The council would comprise the relevant government departments and agencies and the industry players, including tourism associations, environmental activists and professionals, such as lecturers, architects and biologists, Tan added.
