The prosecution in Deputy Rural Development Minister R Sivarasa’s sedition trial told the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur today that they would meet with attorney-general Tommy Thomas for a briefing on the charge.

Deputy public prosecutors Faizah Ismail and Hanim Mohd Rashid told judge Gan Chee Keong that they are awaiting the outcome of the AG’s review of the charge.

Sivarasa’s lawyers, N Surendran and Latheefa Koya, told Gan that their client could not be present in court as the Sungai Buloh MP is attending the swearing-in ceremony in Parliament.

Following this, Gan allowed the trial, which was fixed for today, to be postponed to July 30 pending the outcome of the briefing.

Sivarasa was charged under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948 for his speech during the 2015 Kita Lawan rally.

He is alleged to have made remarks about the judiciary following de facto PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim's then imprisonment for sodomy.

If convicted, he faces a maximum fine of RM5,000, or three years jail, or both.

It was reported last week – in former parliamentarian Surendran's appeal of his own sedition charge – that the Attorney-General’s Chambers is reviewing all ongoing cases of those charged under the Act.
