Yoursay: Contrarian Khairy’s time to shine

YOURSAY | ‘Recent events are continuing to forge him into a real leader.’

Umno, PAS MPs chant 'tipu' and walk out over speaker's appointment

Orang Asal: It seems like the only intelligent people in the opposition in Parliament are Khairy Jamaluddin and Anifah Aman, both of whom stayed behind as BN and PAS lawmakers walked out in protest at the appointment of the House speaker.

The rest are just trying to create a scene. Shame on them.

Anonymous_b67840c8: I think it’s high time for Khairy to leave Umno. He should know that he won’t be able to change the deep-rooted money politics and warlord culture of the party without holding actual power.

Or is he hoping to be sacked by being a Umno contrarian so he can join Bersatu or set up his own party without being called a traitor?

Straight Citizen: Well done Khairy and Anifah, you have earned some respect from the rakyat for behaving like dignified parliamentarians.

Anyway, it's a long journey till the next general election, stay the course and fight to win the hearts of the rakyat again.

Voting Public: My salute to Khairy, who seems to understand what New Malaysia means. He should have won the Umno president's post.

Anonymous_1529020255: I wonder what makes Umno so sure that the 14-day notice (for the appointment of the new speaker) required by the Standing Order was not given.

Was it a mole in the form of a certain candidate for speaker who desired the position but was rejected?

Go ahead and walk out as frequently as you like and forget your obligations to those who voted you in.

Mat Chong Lingam Joseph: It looks like BN and PAS MPs got played big time by the cunning Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

What if Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof’s name was indeed submitted on July 2, and they stayed hush-hush about it, then started to spread statements and speculation in the media of other candidates for House speaker. Perhaps, the sly old fox did it again.

Undecided: What kind of opposition is this? The notice to the secretary is only a matter of procedure and should not be used as a reason for a walkout.

Pakcik Am: Is the 14-day procedural rule inflexible? Should not substance generally prevail over rules? BN must understand that Pakatan Harapan is not a dictatorship. Four strong coalition partners have to agree on the appointment.

Sirach: The walkout was foolish. But with Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as Umno president, that will be par for the course.

Once again, Khairy has shown backbone. It was a classic instance of putting form over substance. If Ariff is acceptable to all, then why the grand show of protest over mere procedure? It’s time to grow up.

Sun: Khairy, finally the breeding and education have outshone the pull of power and authority.

Stay independent and support what is right, even if it comes from the government bench, and you will be remembered long after Umno is buried in the rubbish heap of history.

Respect for the House - KJ explains decision to stay put

Anonymous: It's great to see Khairy finally getting the recognition he deserves. Personally, I think Malaysia will be better served in the longer term with him staying in Umno.

It would be too easy for him to jump ship and he is now bigger than that, having thrown off the shackles of the herd mentality that we saw with the others in his coalition today.

Recent events are continuing to forge him into a real leader. It's going to take some time, but his moment is coming – as is Najib and Zahid's, but for different reasons.

I don't think for one moment that KJ is alone in his thinking within Umno, far from it.

Newday: For all those Umno and PAS MPs who walked out based on the 14-day notice issue, just remember who you are following out the door – Najib Abdul Razak – who managed to break just about any parliamentary rule through the speaker when in power.

All you did was waste essential Parliament time and embarrass yourselves. Stunts like this will drive the voters further away, and any smattering of respect the rakyat may have for Umno/PAS will just evaporate.

Pick your game up, act like responsible adults and do your job for your constituency. Will walking out of Parliament help them? No.

MC Hammer: Get ready for five more years of this behaviour by the so-called opposition. Khairy was the guy that Umno should have chosen if they wished to remain relevant, but the clowns elected to continue clowning around.

With media access to Parliament, the whole country and world can see them for what they are.

There isn’t much Zahid can do to Khairy and Anifah, other than issuing show-cause notices, which will most likely be ignored.

What we witnessed today is the formation of a forward block in Umno, one that might be smarter and actually cooperate with Harapan when it is required to but exploit every opportunity it can.

No wonder Mahathir was laughing at them, they just made the job of the old grand chessmaster easier.

Not Confused: The country had lost all respect for the parliamentary process. However, the new government is about to give the new opposition a long hard lesson in how to transact the business of government in an open and responsible way.

The actions today of the remnants of Umno just goes to remind us all of the mentality of what is now the opposition.

Khairy and Anifah were right to demonstrate their respect for the House. I think we should all support them for their actions and hope that Umno will eventually recognise where they have failed the country in the past few decades.

Anonymous_db56f03b: Umno should sack Khairy and Anifah. Then they will have two less seats in Parliament.
