The Sungai Kandis by-election will be a yardstick for measuring public support of BN, following the 14th general election (GE14), said Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan.

"GE14 was an irrational election. This by-election will let us see how rational people are in electing a party to either the state assembly or Parliament," he said at a press conference in Shah Alam today. 

BN was ousted from federal power for the first time on May 9, while Pakatan Harapan solidified its hold on Selangor for a third term.

This included a defeat in Sungai Kandis to the late incumbent Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei.

The by-election is expected to be a straight fight between Umno's Lokman Adam and PKR's Zawawi Mughni. 

Mohamad hopes it will remain this way. 

He added that there was no indication that PAS, which decided to sit out the by-election, would assist the BN campaign. 

Meanwhile, on the topic of campaigning, Mohamad said BN will not be affected by its accounts being frozen as part of the 1MDB probe. 

"We campaign by word of mouth, not with money. We will campaign by convincing (voters) by going house to house," he said.
