BN candidate Lokman Adam is hoping for a boost in the upcoming Sungai Kandis by-election from his political rivals, namely those aligned to PKR deputy president Azmin Ali.

He claimed that Azmin's faction was displeased that PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail had named Zawawi Mughni as the party's candidate.

"Azmin and his friends are disappointed that Wan Azizah nominated Zawawi without consulting him (Azmin).

"We have received hints from our old friends who will help, as well as from friends in PAS. This is a positive indication," he told a press conference in Shah Alam today.

Lokman was previously a PKR member before he was sacked from the party in 2004.

It was previously reported that Selangor PKR had allegedly wanted to field Mohd Razlan Jalaluddin before Wan Azizah picked Zawawi.

Earlier today, Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said he had not proposed any names, and that Wan Azizah's decision was final.

Zawawi, meanwhile, denied having lobbied to be a candidate and claimed that those who did not get nominated had voiced their support for him.

The Sungai Kandis state seat fell vacant upon the death of incumbent assemblyperson Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei early this month due to complications from lymphoma.

During the press conference, Lokman said Shuhaimi was a friend from his days in PKR, and recited a brief prayer for the deceased.

The Sungai Kandis by-election would be held on Aug 4, with nominations tomorrow.
