PAS is contemplating sitting out yet another Selangor by-election after its decision not to contest in the upcoming Sungai Kandis polls.

Party vice-president Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said although the matter was still being discussed, the majority view from within the party was that it keep out of this by-election as well.

"Like how we decided not to participate in the Sungai Kandis by-election, the same decision may be taken in Balakong.

"Furthermore, there is a smaller percentage of Malay voters in Balakong than in Sungai Kandis, which only reinforces the argument not to contest the seat," he said when met in Kota Bharu today.

The Chinese-majority constituency of Balakong comprises 30 percent Malay voters, unlike the 72 percent in Sungai Kandis.

The Selangor state seat fell vacant upon the death of its incumbent Eddie Ng Tien Chee in a car crash last Friday. 

A date for the by-election, the second to be held since the May 9 general election, has yet to be announced.

Amar also further reiterated PAS' stance of sitting out the Sungai Kandis polls to ensure no split votes against Pakatan Harapan, though not under instruction nor agreement to help BN win the seat.

MCA to meet on candidate pick

Meanwhile, MCA president Liow Tiong Lai said that the party may opt to use its own logo instead of that of BN in Balakong.

"We will have a meeting to decide about this and to pick a candidate for the seat," he was reported as saying by The Star today.

Liow also admitted that winning the seat would be difficult, but he said it was important for MCA to do so, as it may serve as check and balance for the government.

The Selangor state seat was traditionally held by MCA until it was taken over by the DAP since 2008.

BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had stated on Friday that the opposition coalition would leave it to MCA to field a candidate to contest the seat.

Zahid had said the candidate would be chosen from among those nominated by the component party, which fielded a candidate during the 14th general election in May. 

In the last polls, Ng won the Balakong seat with an almost 36,000-vote majority, garnering 41,768 votes to defeat PAS' Mohd Ibrahim Ghazali (6,230) and MCA's Lim Chin Wah (5,874).
