Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Liew Vui Keong said today that the government hopes to table a motion to abolish the GST in the Dewan Rakyat next Monday.

The bill for the implementation of the Sales and Services Tax (SST), which will replace the GST, is also expected to be tabled next week.

"It's likely to be Monday.

"After the session (of the royal decree debate), this will be followed by the abolition of the GST, (the tabling of) the SST (bill), and the abolition of Anti-Fake News Act," he said at the Parliament lobby today.

The GST was introduced in Malaysia through the Goods and Services Tax Act 2014, which came into force on April 1 the following year.

The standard rate for GST is six percent and it is collected at every stage of a supply chain.

Pakatan Harapan had pledged in its manifesto to abolish GST and revive SST despite acknowledging GST is a more efficient and transparent taxation.

The government had implemented zero-rated GST in June and is expected to impose SST in September.

The SST was introduced through the Sales Tax Act 1972 and the Service Tax Act 1975.

Meanwhile, Liew noted that the ministries in charge of abolishing the Anti-Fake News Act 2018 (AFN) and Security Offences (Special Measure) Act  (Sosma) will table memorandums to seek the cabinet's approval.

Harapan had pledged in its manifesto to abolish the draconian acts formulated by the previous administration.
