Known as a politician who keeps his cards close to his chest, PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali once again left a question mark hovering above his plan with regard to the upcoming party elections.

Quizzed in Parliament this afternoon if he would contest for the top post, he claimed to be bogged down with his tasks as economic affairs minister.

"I haven't made a decision because I'm too busy with my new job," he told reporters.

According to him, his current priority is debating issues related to the rakyat in the Parliament. 

"We concentrate on Parliament (because there are) many issues raised by both parties, and as (part of the) new government, it is my duty, as well other leaders' to make this parliamentary sitting the place to debate issues related to the people," he said. 

So far, only Anwar Ibrahim has offered himself for the president's post, which is currently held by his wife and Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Azmin's continued reluctance to state if he would defend his position as deputy president has led to speculation that he might take on his former boss in next month's polls.

The Gombak MP had once served as Anwar's political aide and remained loyal to the latter even after Dr Mahathir Mohamad had sacked him as the then deputy premier in 1998.

Speculation of a possible Anwar-Azmin clash gathered momentum when outgoing PKR women's wing head Zuraida Kamaruddin and her Malacca PKR counterpart Ginie Lim issued statements proposing that no one is prevented from challenging Anwar for the top position.

Should Azmin choose to defend his current position, it is possible that he might be challenged by current PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli.

The outcome of the PKR elections could have far-reaching implications on the cabinet and other government positions.

The nomination process will be held between July 27 and 29, while voting takes place at the end of August.

PKR is the only major political party in Malaysia whose top leadership is elected directly by members.

Meanwhile, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution said he will not contest in the party election. 

Party vice-presidents A Xavier Jayakumar and Nurul Izzah Anwar have not decided if they will defend their posts. 

"No decision has been made yet. We are going to discuss with all party members. I will let you know, as we still have another month," said Xavier, who is also the Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister. 

PKR Selayang MP William Leong said he is interested to contest the vice-president post. 

"I am interested. Discussion with various parties, leaders and my supporters are ongoing. The decision will be made some time this week, and then we will announce (it)," he said.
