A Kuala Lumpur High Court judge reprimanded Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Mohd Yunos today, telling him not to treat the court like a "coffee shop."

When cross-examined by his counsel Mohamed Nasir Yusof, Jamal said he had conducted his own research into Bersih, and could not find the electoral reform group listed with the Registrar of Societies or the Companies Commission.

This resulted in Justice Mohd Zaki Abdul Wahab telling Jamal: "Please do not treat this court like your own coffee shop.

"Where is the result of your search? Is it in court or in evidence before the court? Remember, this is a court and not your coffee shop."

Following the ticking off, Jamal cut short his reply, and then said it was based on his recollection of the search he conducted.

Maria (photo), now the Petaling Jaya MP, sued Jamal for claiming that the group had been infiltrated by Islamic State elements prior to the 2016 Bersih 5 rally.

During cross-examination by Maria's counsel N Surendran, Jamal stuck to what he said in his witness statement, that Maria's late husband Yunos Lebai Ali, was involved in the 1972 Munich Olympics bombing.

However, Yunos was a Universiti Malaya student at the time.

Jamal was the last witness to testify for the defence, after having subpoenaed Dr Mahathir Mohamad, former inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar, and Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim.

Maria had herself, along with PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim and activist Hishamudin Rais, testified as a witness for the plaintiff.

Jamal was brought from the Sungai Buloh prison this morning, where he was sent after being denied bail for a charge of resisting arrest earlier this month. 

During cross-examination by Maria's counsel N Surendran, Jamal maintained his statement regarding Yunos' alleged involvement in the Olympics bombing, which he claimed he got from social media and Malaysiakini. 

Surendran: Can you show the Malaysiakini article?

Jamal: It is not in court.

Surendran: Do you know the attack is done by a group called Black September?

Jamal: I am not sure.

Surendran: Do you know (Maria's husband) Yunos?

Jamal: No.

Surendran: Do you know that according to the white paper, Yunos was with the Palestine Liberation Organisation and he was not a member of the Black September?

Jamal: Yes it is not stated.

Surendran: Do you know that one of the witnesses you subpoenaed, Hassan (now Pasir Gudang MP) said that Yunos studied in Universiti Malaya at that time?

Jamal: I am not sure.

Surendran: Do you know Yasser Arafat had visited Malaysia and the PLO has its office here?

Jamal: I do not know.

The Sungai Besar Umno chief was also asked about the letter of demand which he received from Maria and flushed down the toilet after tearing it in front of some press members.

Jamal said he tore it because it came from Maria and not Bersih.

He also clarified in court that when he said "Marina Chin," what he actually meant was Maria Chin.

Zaki had asked him for the clarification, as both Marina and Maria are known personalities. Marina was Malaysia's track queen in the 1970s.

Jamal, who leads the red shirts group, said that a statement warning Bersih protesters of bloodshed if they proceeded with the Bersih 5 rally was misattributed to him.

"It was made through a fake Facebook account. I have lodged a police report over it. As a result of it, I had to be remanded for four days," he said.

When asked by Surendran whether he could produce the said police report, Jamal replied he could not.

With the case closed, Zaki fixed Aug 13 for the court to hear submissions.
