A committee comprising parliamentarians from both sides of the divide needs to be formed to discuss the recognition of Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), suggested Ketereh MP Annuar Musa.

"I want to suggest a committee consisting of MPs from all sides of the political divide sit down and discuss (this issue)," he told the media at the Parliament lobby.

"We must look after their interests, if we ‘disown’ them for taking UEC, then we will lose them to Taiwan, Oxford and elsewhere," the BN lawmaker said.

He said the UEC students should be given the opportunity to join mainstream education.

He noted the stand of BN and Pakatan Harapan in terms of UEC recognition was quite close, thus there is room for both sides to discuss the matter.

All parties should not be emotional and only look at the matter along racial lines, he said.

"When people talk about UEC, there is a lot of misunderstanding, some people get mixed up," he said.

"I am sure there is a way we can (work things out to) comply with the national education policy," he added.

"There should be give and take. I think that since we achieved independence 60 years ago, it will not be very difficult (to work things out)," added Annuar.

He reminded some parties that the education provided by Chinese independent high schools is aligned with the Federal Constitution's provisions.

He also noted the United Chinese School Committees' Association (Dong Zong) may need to tweak the UEC curriculum so it complies with the national education policy and Education Act.

He suggested three alternatives to make UEC comply with the education policy.

He proposed that UEC students take the July paper for the  Bahasa Malaysia and History subjects instead of just BM.

"Secondly, Dong Zong can make adjustments to the curriculum of the BM and History subjects so they comply with the national curriculum," he said.

"And, the UEC holders can take SPM also. This has been practised by many of them," he added.
