SG KANDIS POLLS | Amanah Youth chief Mohd Sany Hamzan urged PAS supporters to take their leaders' call for them to vote for Umno in the Sungai Kandis by-election with a pinch of salt.

He said PAS members must think carefully about their choice, pointing out Umno's record on issues of corruption and racism.

"Umno is the party which leaders were involved in corruption and money laundering, birthing the 1MDB scandal which is being investigated globally.

"PAS members and supporters cannot forget the billions of ringgit lost annually as revealed in the auditor-general's report as a result of misappropriation by various ministries and agencies when Umno-BN controlled Putrajaya.

"Voting for Umno would also be akin to conspiring in the manipulation of narrow racial and religious sentiment in a bid to gain power and continue looting the country," Sany said in a statement.

On Wednesday, PAS central committee member Nik Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz took to Facebook to state that his party wants PAS members to vote for Umno in the Sungai Kandis by-election.

Sany said PAS members should not emulate Nik Abduh's short-sighted approach by backing Umno.

"Therefore, Amanah Youth urges voters in Sungai Kandis, particularly PAS supporters, to vote for the Selangor government so that the reform agenda can be strengthened through Pakatan Harapan's victory," he said.

The Aug 4 by-election will be a three-cornered fight between Lokman, PKR's Zawawi Ahmad Mughni and independent candidate K Murthy. PAS is sitting out of this by-election.

In the May 9 general election, PKR won Sungai Kandis by a 12,480-vote majority, with its candidate Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei garnering 23,998 votes.

Umno's Kamaruzzaman Johari obtained 11,518 votes while PAS' Mohd Yusof Abdullah garnered 7,573 votes. PRM's Hanafiah Husin received 76 votes.

Mat Shuhaimi passed away from cancer on July 2.
