The Attorney-General's Chambers has filed an appeal on the decision of the High Court in Shah Alam to grant Sungai Besar Umno division leader Jamal Mohd Yunus a bail of RM20,000.

The Trial and Appeal division head of the chambers, Mohd Hanafiah Zakaria, told Malaysiakini that the notice of appeal had been filed.

"Yes, I can confirm that we have filed a notice of appeal," Hanafiah said.

However, he did not reveal when the notice was filed.

The prosecution can file its appeal within 14 days of a decision of the High Court.

With this, the appeal is expected to be heard by the Court of Appeal.

In allowing the RM20,000 bail, High Court judge Yazid Mustafa agreed with Jamal's counsel Muhammad Shafee Abdullah that the Ampang Magistrate's Court did not have the discretion to reject bail for the offences Jamal was charged with.

Jamal and four others are facing two charges under Section 448 of the Penal Code for trespassing into two business premises in Taman Kosas, Ampang, on Dec 29, 2016.

If convicted, he stands to face a maximum jail sentence of three years, a fine of RM5,000 or both.

Besides the trespassing charges, Jamal was also charged under Section 224 of the Penal Code for escaping from police custody.

Following the report of Jamal's release on bail, two lawyers, Baljit Singh Sidhu and Syed Iskandar Syed Jaafar Al Mahdzar, had called on the chambers to appeal the decision.

They said there are strong grounds for the prosecution to appeal as Jamal had fled the country and the police had to seek help from the Indonesian authorities to bring him back.

As a result of that, bail was denied when he was charged with escaping from police custody.

Jamal was then held at the Sungai Buloh Prison for 27 days before his release on Aug 1.
