Opposition leader Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says there is no reason why BN lawmakers should support the Sales and Services Tax (SST) bills tabled in the Dewan Rakyat.
"Why should we?" he replied when asked at the Parliament lobby if BN lawmakers will back both the Sales Tax Bill 2018 and Services Tax Bill 2018.
Zahid, the Bagan Datuk MP, was asked also if the bills received support from BN senators, who command a majority in the Dewan Negara.
"Let them table (the bills) first," he said.
The Sales Tax and Services Tax bills, which will replace the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Act 2014, were tabled for first reading last Tuesday. Both are now being debated at the policy stage.
Putrajaya is expected to replace the GST system with SST in September if the bills are approved by Parliament.
The Customs Department has indicated that the SST will only be imposed on 6,400 goods, compared to 11,197 items under GST.
In their debate in the House later, both Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam) and Ahmad Maslan (BN-Pontian) opposed the Sales Tax Bill 2018.
