JAKARTA (AFP) - An Indonesian court today passed jail terms on two men accused of involvement in last year's grenade blast at the Malaysian embassy.

Iswadi Jamil, 30, was sentenced to seven years in jail starting from his arrest on August 27 last year.

Army Lance Corporal Ibrahim Hasan, 31, was sentenced in absentia to eight years. He escaped on July 27 this year while under military police detention,

Judge Muhammad Munawar at South Jakarta court found them guilty of supplying another man with the grenade that was thrown into the embassy parking lot.

The two were found guilty of "illegally carrying and handing over two hand grenades to Iwan Setiawan who later used it to cause the blast at the Malaysian embassy," Munawar said.

Jamil said he would appeal. "In this case, I am truly innocent," said the student at Aceh's Syiah Kuala university.

Prosecutor Solaiman Hadjarati had sought 10 years for each defendant.

The same court last week sentenced three men involved in the same case to between 12 and a half and 15 years in jail.

Setiawan, 30, was sentenced to 15 years while two others were jailed for 12 years and six months each.

No one was was injured in the embassy blast and the motive has remained unclear.

There was resentment in Indonesia at the time over cases of Indonesian maids being abused by Malaysian employers and over Malaysia's deportation of illegal Indonesian immigrants.
