DAP chairperson Tan Kok Wai is the new special envoy to China, according to a China Press report.

The Chinese daily said Tan confirmed his appointment which was effective Aug 1.

He replaced former MCA president Ong Ka Ting who was the special envoy to China under the previous BN government.

Tan said his priority will be to strengthen the relationship between Putrajaya and Beijing.

"Malaysia and China have a long-standing relationship, be it in terms of economy or culture.

"Therefore my position comes with a heavy responsibility," he was quoted as saying.

Tan's appointment came amid some friction between Malaysia and China.

This was after Malaysia decided to pause several mega projects in the country which are being built by Chinese state-owned companies.

They included a pipeline project and the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL).

A government source told Malaysiakini that Tan will be accompanying Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to China this week.
