PARLIAMENT | Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng has filed a motion in the Dewan Rakyat for the auditor-general and the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to reopen investigations into the 1MDB scandal.

The motion also urged for all information related to the investigation to be made public.

“(The finance minister to move) that Dewan Rakyat resolves that the auditor-general and PAC conduct again a detailed investigation on the embezzlement of monies and the scandal with regard to 1MDB and its related companies in order to restore the dignity of the Dewan Rakyat; and that all related information should be made public,” the motion reads.

It is currently fifth on today’s Order Paper, after the continuation of the Supply Bill’s third reading, and the second reading of the Anti-Fake News (Repeal) Bill and the Land Public Transport Bill.

It is expected to be tabled tomorrow, on the last day of this Dewan Rakyat sitting.

Previously, the former 1MDB management had purportedly withheld documents from the auditor-general and the PAC on the grounds that they had been seized by the authorities.

The auditor-general’s 1MDB report was also classified under the Official Secrets Act (OSA) 1972 in 2016.

It was declassified upon Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s request after the 14th general election.

The first PAC probe into 1MDB was completed in February 2016 and published in April that year.

It concluded that then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak was not involved in any wrongdoing in the matter, and held the board of directors accountable instead.

However, the PAC did not manage to interview Najib as part of its probe, despite him chairing 1MDB’s board of advisors.
