Marine police successfully rescued seven people abducted in the waters near Pulau Langgun this morning, but another four Malaysians were taken across the border to Thailand.

In a statement, Langkawi OCPD Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said police received a call from a dragnet fishing boat at about 8.35am this morning claiming to have been robbed near the island.

Preliminary investigations found that two fishing boats were boarded and seized by 12 Thai men in two motorboats who were carrying firearms.

“Acting on information, marine police went to the location and successfully intercepted a motorboat carrying the victims and suspects.

"Seven victims were rescued and four Thai suspects in the boat were detained.

“Marine police also seized three pistols used in the incident,” he said.

Iqbal added that all victims and suspects have been brought to the Langkawi police headquarters for further investigation, while efforts are still underway to recover the four Malaysians bought to Thailand.
