A reformed Election Commission could take over the task of the Registrar of Societies to register political parties.

Towards this, the agenda of the Electoral Reform Committee (ERC) includes a possibility for the EC to register political parties and grant ballot access for parties and candidates.

Asked if this meant taking over responsibilities from the ROS, ERC chairperson Abdul Rashid Ab Rahman replied: "We are looking into that."

This is among 15 reforms being discussed by the ERC, including outlining a legal framework to establish an "electoral management body" that may or may not replace the EC.

The ROS has been accused of being used as a political tool by the previous BN government.

Critics have cited incidents such as its threat to deregister Bersatu over non-compliance with its party constitution, the delay in registering Pakatan Harapan as a coalition and the approval of a second extension for the Umno party election.

Meanwhile, on a separate matter, Rashid said he was not in favour of e-voting as it can easily lead to accusations of vote rigging.

However, he is keen to observe the PKR party elections, which will be using e-voting.

"I hope they let me be an observer," he said with a laugh.
