A survey conducted by Merdeka Center showed that 92 percent of those aged between 21 and 30 were satisfied with the recent general election result though only about 65 percent thought the country was heading in the right direction.

The survey, conducted from May 16 to 31, engaged 558 people nationwide, said Merdeka Center researcher Ehsan Shah Wahid who presented his findings at a forum co-organised by Watan in Petaling Jaya, today.

"Our findings showed that 48 percent went out to vote as they felt that voting was their civic duty while 31 percent voted because of the need for change.

"About 70 percent of them were first-time voters," he added.

Ehsan revealed that interestingly, 67 percent of the participants had made up their mind a year earlier on which party they would vote for with 93 percent of them rejecting the “spoil your vote” movement.

About 85 percent of the participants thought that the Pakatan Harapan manifesto was important with three promises being the most popular.

They were the abolishment of the GST, the re-introduction of oil subsidies and the pledge to address major scandals plaguing the nation such as those related to 1MDB, Mara, Felda and Tabung Haji.

"Overall, our findings showed that the result of the 14th general election was well received by the young voters. They saw that there was a need for change. After the election, the satisfaction level was so high […] the sense of euphoria was high.

"They are still positive and confident of the Harapan government," he said, adding the survey also showed that the promises made by Harapan were attractive to young people.
