Ministries to work together to ensure smooth SST implementation

The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry will coordinate with several ministries to ensure the smooth implementation of the sales and service tax (SST).

Its minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the coordination would be carried out by the ministry in collaboration with the Finance Ministry as well as the Communications and Multimedia Ministry.

"The SST Act is under the Finance Ministry, and it will determine which goods will be imposed with the tax, while the Communications Ministry is involved in telco services, such as mobile phone prepaid added value cards,” he said.

Saifuddin said this to reporters after attending a Companies Commission of Malaysia charity programme in  Kampung Tengah Relau, Kulim today.

Also present were ministry secretary-general Jamil Salleh, SSM CEO Zahrah Abd Wahab and state Indian community affairs, unity, domestic trade and consumer affairs exco R Summugam.

Saifuddin also said that his ministry understood the constraints faced by some traders who had insufficient information on SST implementation, causing them not to realise they were committing offences.

He said traders were advised to refer to the Customs Department website on the list of goods and services imposed with SST.
