Proton records highest sales in 36 months

National carmaker Proton Holdings Bhd sold 9,501 cars in August, the highest sales figure in 36 months, primarily fuelled by the zero-rated goods and services tax (GST) climate prior to the implementation of the sales and services tax (SST).

August sales outnumbered July sales by 11.7 percent.

Proton’s sales arm Proton Edar chief executive officer Abdul Rashid Musa said the strong sales were also contributed by the company’s aggressive marketing campaigns that reminded Malaysians to take advantage of the once-in-a-lifetime tax holiday.

“The strong sales numbers show there is an increase in public confidence in the brand as more people are choosing Proton due to the attractive overall package we offer,” Abdul Rashid said in a statement today.

He said similar to the previous seven months, the Saga continued to lead the sales with 4,174 registrations in August, followed by the Persona (2,957 registrations).

He added that other models performed strongly as well, fuelled by buyers looking for new cars before the end of the month.

In line with the increase in sales volume, Abdul Rashid said, Proton is estimated to account for 15.4 percent of the total industry volume (TIV) in August.

“Our turnaround plan is on track so the onus is on us to make sure these new customers stay by delivering a high level of customer service,” he said.

Abdul Rashid said Proton would absorb the SST charge for all models in September, ensuring buyers can still benefit from the tax-free price.

“This will benefit them (buyers) during this transitional period and help Proton maintain the sales momentum it has recently built,” he said.

On top of absorbing the SST for all models in September, Proton would also be celebrating Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day by offering generous deals on selected models, with discounts ranging from RM500 to RM1,000 for the Saga, Iriz and Persona.

“The recently launched Proton Ertiga Xtra, featuring new seat covers and a new touchscreen head unit, will be offered with RM2,000 off the list price,” he added.
